Dr. Jorge Torres was born and raised in the inner city of Los Angeles to immigrant parents seeking the “American Dream.” Having to provide for their families, his parents only attained an elementary education, making him and his siblings the first to graduate from high school and college. Seeing the lack of opportunity and disparate outcomes in his community, he sought to “help others.” Quickly, he realized that the best way to help others was through education, where he has been working for the last 20+ years. As executive director of College & Career at Compton Unified School District, Jorge has been blessed to land his dream job, where he is able to change the lifelong trajectories for students just like him.
