Architects of Math Opportunity: Exploring Equity in Students’ Postsecondary Math Pathway Choices

Architects of Math Opportunity: Exploring Equity in Students’ Postsecondary Math Pathway Choices

To challenge and ultimately change the prevailing architecture of math opportunity entails broadening and updating the content of math and quantitative reasoning courses required for college success. As postsecondary institutions in California and across the country expand the range of math pathways available to students, it is critical that access to these pathways is based on students’ authentic interests, not on student characteristics such as race and class.

In this webinar, Just Equations Executive Director Pamela Burdman and RDP Consulting President and CEO Rogéair D. Purnell discuss their recent report, Go Figure: Exploring Equity in Students’ Postsecondary Math Pathway Choices. They are joined by My-Linh Nguyen, associate professor of counseling services at Cuyamaca College, and Vikash Reddy, senior director of policy research at the Campaign for College Opportunity, to discuss strategies for supporting students in making optimal math pathway choices and ensuring positive mathematics classroom experiences.
