From algorithms to AI, data and technology have expanded into every corner of our society, emphasizing the importance of math education. More than half of U.S. states now are part of a nationwide movement to redesign high school math to update math courses, increase access to advanced courses, and create an equitable pipeline to college.
Beyond Algebra: High School Math for a New Generation, a new report by Just Equations, explores the new directions in multiple states that are actively planning or already implementing their high school math redesign.
We found a heavy emphasis on aligning math courses with students’ college and career interests, as well as with the demand for data competency in the 21st century. The redesigns also address the disparities in access to advanced math courses for underserved students.
State mathematics leaders, in a survey for the report, underscore their motivation to provide access to a wider range of rigorous math courses that will prepare the next generation of math students for success in college and beyond.
