Beyond the Numbers: Student Voices on Equitable Math Education

Critical conversations about mathematics education have too often centered students’ data without centering students’ voices. To truly transform math instruction into a justice-oriented discipline, we must prioritize the voices and perspectives of the individuals who are at the heart of this educational journey—our students. While data and research play crucial roles in shaping pedagogy, we must make space for the lived experiences, insights, and aspirations of K–12 and postsecondary students. Our remarkable youth advocates are champions of justice-oriented mathematics instruction who recognize the importance of equitable and relevant mathematics education and are actively advocating for change within their communities.
