Opening Keynote Dialogue: Mathematics for a Thriving Democracy

While many discussions about math education focus on preparation for STEM, mathematical reasoning abilities are also central to full participation in democracy. An insufficient foundation in math can leave students ill-equipped to exercise their political and civil rights. Whether it’s criminal justice, gerrymandering, political polling, or public health outcomes, mathematical and statistical thinking are central to understanding many contemporary issues. In this session, leading thinkers examined the important role of access to a rigorous math education in a vibrant and equitable society.
