Just Equations Executive Director Pamela Burdman discusses her journey from the Hewlett Foundation to Just Equations, and why she believes math education must be a gateway, not a gatekeeper, for future opportunities.
But right now, Burdman says, math education is placing a disproportionate emphasis on calculus and algebra at the expense of areas such as statistics and probability, which are increasingly important for students, including those pursuing STEM careers.
Widening the lens on math education to incorporate a broader perspective and range of topics—without compromising rigor—will prepare students for success in college, in their careers, and as citizens, Burdman argues. In fact, she points out that there can be a lot of rigor in using mathematics to analyze and solve social issues.
