The 74 features Just Equations’ report, Aligned by Design: How Cross-System Math Alignment Can Improve Students’ Pathways From High School to College. The article highlights five states at the forefront of math system redesign. These states—California, Georgia, Oregon, Tennessee, and Utah—have implemented promising strategies for improving math pathways from high school to college.
“Too often we spend a lot of energy discussing the challenges and constraints related to education or redesigning math,” said Shakiyya Bland, director of educational partnerships and report coauthor, who was interviewed for the story. “This report highlights states that are doing the work, showing what’s possible.”
The article also includes perspectives from Tennessee and Utah state officials, who were interviewed as part of the report. Mike Spencer, secondary mathematics specialist for the Utah state board of education, told The 74, “the change has been helpful to many students who might otherwise be kept out of college by their inability to pass a course that often had no bearing on their major or career aspiration.”
