The Sacramento Bee covers the University of California Board of Regents’ September meeting, including new data showing that the proportion of first-year students who received a D or F grade in, withdrew from, or did not pass calculus, precalculus, or preparatory math courses increased from 13 to 18 percent.
“It’s essential that the university take the time required to fully investigate the nature, causes, and history of gaps in math readiness, which have been growing nationwide for a decade or more,” said Just Equations Executive Director Pamela Burdman during the meeting’s public comment period. “Admissions policies did not cause these gaps and cannot remedy them.”
