In an article by CalMatters higher education reporter Mikhail Zinshteyn, Just Equations Executive Director Pamela Burdman points out why the University of California San Diego is an outlier when assessing the state of math preparation across the UC system.
For example, Burdman explains two plausible reasons for the increased number of students in remedial math courses at UCSD: (1) a change in the campus’s placement exam policy in 2024 that barred students from using calculators and (2) an increase in the minimum score needed to avoid being placed in remedial math that year.
The article cites a document recently published by Just Equations that answers key questions about math preparation at UC and highlights why admissions policies are not the cause of or the solution to address declining math performance among entering students.
